June 2004: 'I was born in Syria, Homs. My dad’s name is Riad Sarkees. My dad has nine brothers and four sisters. Even in Homs there is another Sarkees family, but we are not related. I immigrated to Canada in 1999, since then I did not visit Syria. I have heard a story from some relatives that our family originated from Greece. I am not sure about this story. Anyhow, I have one Aunt, Josephine Sarkees, in Ottawa and one Uncle, Mekhabber Sarkees, Detroit USA.
It was very amusing to see this web site and read about different people who have Sarkees family name. Not only that, but also the story behind them.

My relatives still live in Montreal, but whenever I go down there for a visit, we always eat great egyptian foods like baklava and many others. My grandfather was one of many children born to Tamir Sarkis who lived in the village called Bait Sarkis, in the district of Safita, Governorate of Tartous, Syria. I believe he origianlly came from the village of Hadchit, Lebanon. My grandfather was Elias Sarkis and his siblings were Jamil, Nasim, Nicolas, Hanna, Joseph, Emeline, Lamia and Belanda. Five of the brothers migrated from Syria in the early 1900's. Elias and James went to the US, Elias settling in Seattle, Washington and Jamil in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The other three, Nasim, Nicolas and Joseph settled in Mexico at Leon Guano Juata. I am interested in communicating with anyone who has information on the family.'

I remind that both my avos "maternal and paternal", are immigrant Yabrud's vindos in the Syria and is important also remind that sane descending of the only Catholic families in this city (village), so that we can affirm that all the raw in the city cemetery before 1900 are our ancestral.

Esse meu avo quando chegou ao Brasil por volta do ano de 1897 foi morar na cidade de Baeapendi trabalhou como mascate até estabelecer-se como comerciante na cidade de Caxambu MG e mais tarde Rio de Janeiro , faleceu nessa cidade com 78 anos, seu Irmão Pedro Sarkis estabeleceu-se como comerciante na cidadede Corriente na Argentina sua irmã mais nova ainda esta viva e mora na cidade de São Lourenço ( e todos nacidade conhecem-na, chama-se Sultani).Lembro que ambos meus avos "maternos e paternos", são imigrantes vindos de Yabrud na Síria é importante também lembrar que são descendentes das únicas famílias católicas nessa cidade (aldeia), de modo que podemos afirmar que todas as cruzes no cemitério da cidade antes de 1900 são nossos ancestrais.

I 'm aware Sarkis is a common name, and a sainthood- does anyone know where it originates from exactly? I am a second generation American and we have lost my great grandfather's first name- some in the family believe his first name was Sarkis and the surname was changed, or lost. Some say it was Sarkisian- who knows? most are quite old now and only throw hummus at each other and argue... I'm sure that my great grandfather was a fugitive from the Turks, as family legend goes he was forced to serve as a quasi-tax collector in the ghettoes and was siphoning funds back to the people of his village, part of underground Resistance. The family supposedly escaped to the U.S., with 5 members, securing passage,
after having lost a baby to the Turks. My grandfather, Alexander (Iskendar) Sarkis, married Julia Merhige, from Homs, Syria. I know he lived- at times- in Latakia, Tripoli and Paris before settling in Brooklyn, NY'.

I am an orthopaedic Surgeon and have my Clinic and Hospital in Homs, Syria. Married and have tow Sons: Gabi 17 years old and Dani 15 years old. The Family lives in Homs since over threehundred Years. I could find the Roots untill "Boulos Sarkis" who wrote a comment to his Son "Loutfi Sarkis" dated 1699 and I could follow the branches untill now, with some freespaces where I could not find the Connections between some Parts of the Family. A Part of the Family went to Ras-Baalbeck, Lebanon, and some to Tripoli, Lebanon. They live know in Beirut and in Ras-Baalbeck. another Part went at the beginning of the 20th Century to south America. At about 1920, four Sons of Domit Sarkis (Thomas Sarkis) have changed their Names to "Hadji Thomas" and lived since then in Greece and a small Part of them in Beirut. I'll be very Happy to receive any new Information about the Family Sarkis and also to give more details about the Informations I have.
